From Karen Burgess, CEO and executive director of the Michigan Dental Association:

“Gov. Snyder’s plan to expand Michigan’s nationally recognized Healthy Kids Dental program to disadvantaged children in Kalamazoo and Macomb counties is both responsible and compassionate. The members of the Michigan Dental Association congratulate the governor and legislators for their dedication to improving the oral health of Michigan’s children.

“The expansion into Southeast Michigan represents a significant step in the program. Healthy Kids Dental will fill a major gap in the safety net by providing dental care to approximately 80,000 Medicaid-eligible children in Macomb County.

“Nearly 27,000 Kalamazoo County children will now have access to regular, preventive dental care, thanks to the expansion.

“Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, and poor children suffer twice as much decay as more affluent children. Oral health — and overall health — will be improved by expanding early preventive dental care.”
