The following statement can be attributed to Marty Makowski, DDS, the president of the Michigan Dental Association and a pediatric dentist in Macomb County.

“The Michigan Legislature took a major step today in its commitment to improve the oral health of Michigan’s children by funding the expansion of the Healthy Kids Dental program in Macomb and Kalamazoo counties.

“Nearly 100,000 additional Medicaid-eligible children in the state (24,000 in Kalamazoo and 74,000 in Macomb) will now have access to a dental home, a significant step in ensuring that they do not suffer needlessly due to untreated dental disease.

“As a pediatric dentist, it’s heart-wrenching to see rampant dental decay and disease because a child’s family lacks the resources to access preventive dental health care.

“The success of the Healthy Kids Dental Program is well-documented throughout its 14-year history. Thanks to this action, more than 600,000 children in 80 counties have access to a local dental home for regular preventive care.

“The legislature’s action is to be applauded, and the Michigan Dental Association is confident that the final three Michigan counties that have yet to be funded for Healthy Kids Dental – Wayne, Oakland and Kent – will receive the same legislative support in the near future. Adding these 410,000 children to Healthy Kids will mean that each one of Michigan’s one million children from low-income families will have the same access to dental health care.”
