OKEMOS, Mich. – Starting late this year, Medicaid eligible children ages 13-20 in Kent, Oakland and Wayne counties will receive dental coverage thanks to the newly expanded Healthy Kids Dental program. In this time of great budget challenges, the Legislature approved an additional $25.6 million to expand Healthy Kids Dental to fully cover eligible children ages 0 – 20 in all 83 Michigan counties.

“We applaud lawmakers for stepping up and helping to eliminate barriers for all children in Michigan,” said Dr. Larry DeGroat, president of the Michigan Dental Association. “Providing access to the best and safest oral health care to all Michigan residents is our number one priority. Although there is still more work to be done by recognizing the importance of providing dental care coverage and removing barriers to care, expanding access to all kids is definitely a step in the right direction.”

This additional funding brings total support for the Healthy Kids Dental program to $200 million. In June (2015), the program was expanded to cover the last three of Michigan’s 83 counties and went into effect Oct. 1. Medicaid beneficiaries are automatically covered under the Healthy Kids Dental program and can seek dental care with any dentist currently participating with Delta Dental (program administrator). There is no co-pay for Healthy Kids Dental services.

Healthy Kids Dental is considered a national model for improving access to dental care for underserved children. Nearly 80 percent of Michigan dentists participate in Healthy Kids Dental and the utilization rate is significantly higher than what it is for traditional Medicaid.
